In the heart of Calabria, which occupies the ‘toe’ of Italy’s famous boot-shaped peninsula, the city of Lamezia-Terme encapsulates that ultra-cool vision we all have of Italy; vespas zipping down cobbled streets, cafés spilling onto the pavements, classic art and architecture at every turn, lovely beaches and chic bars serving Campari cocktails.

This region is the perfect place to go if you want holiday escapism and raw authenticity in equal measure. The Norman-Swabian castle towers over the city. Inside, you can get a glimpse into the region’s illustrious past through its grand towers and courtyards. The Bastion of Malta is another of Lamezia-Terme’s historical fortresses. Dating back to the 16th century, visitors can imagine themselves transported back in time by exploring its underground passages.

Piazza Italia is the city’s main square where you can wander along its elegant arcades and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the surrounding cafés and restaurants. Lamezia Terme is famous for its rich mineral waters and many visitors come here to pamper themselves with spa treatments at the thermal baths.

Calabria is also a foodie’s paradise, and while you can expect classic pizza and other Italian specialities, it’s most famous for its spicy nduja sausage, which is proudly served all over the region, spread on fresh bread or stirred into pasta. The region is also famous for its wine-making tradition and you can visit local vineyards where you can sample some of the region’s distinctive wines overlooking the surrounding countryside.
