La Romana is a hidden slice of paradise an hour south of Punta Cana, one of the Dominican Republic’s better-known beach destinations. It’s a popular cruise stop and the ideal place for a family holiday or a romantic getaway. There’s also a growing number of golf resorts in the area, if you’re keen to improve your swing.

Cotubanamá National Park is a vast region of lush jungle and mangroves with hundreds of species of flora, birds, and a rich underwater marine life. It is also home to two tranquil islands which you can take a boat tour or catamaran excursion to visit. Saona Island is a paradise of clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, and leaning palm trees. Here you can explore the local fishing village, Mano Juan, visit a turtle sanctuary, and even go ziplining. On Catalina Island you can trek through the jungle and dive into its colourful coral reefs. You can also swim in the beautiful, crystal water inside Cueva Padre Nuestro’s cenote surrounded by bats, stalagmites, and stalactites, and learn about the Taino Indians who once inhabited the jungle.

Feed the cheeky squirrel monkeys who live at Monkeyland, but be ready, as they’ll climb all over you to pose for a photo. You can also enjoy a scenic river cruise on Chavón River, surrounded by a rich tropical jungle. See if you can guess which movies have been filmed here. Cigars are the Dominican Republic’s biggest export, and you can try your hand at making one at one of La Romana’s many cigar factories. You can even buy some fine local cigars at duty-free prices.

A short distance from La Romana is Altos de Chavón, a reconstructed 16th-century Mediterranean village with narrow cobbled alleyways where you’ll find a cultural centre, a museum, an amphitheater, several restaurants, and quaint shops selling local craftwork. The whole area is perfectly geared up for tourism and offers several unforgettable experiences, excursions, and delightful days out in a tropical setting.
