Often hailed as Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city, you’ll never be short of things to do in Geneva. It’s a whirlwind of a city, buzzing with business people and young professionals, and you can comfortably slip into the culture of busy city-living days and sultry cocktail-drinking nights – and Geneva is passionate about cocktails. Sip a martini at the bar of one of Geneva’s luxurious waterfront hotels, or visit one of its many quirky little cocktail bars slightly off the beaten tack. The districts of Eaux-Vives, Carouge and Plainpalais have lots to choose from, including the speakeasy-styled La Verre à Monique and the cool and creative L’Atelier Cocktail Club.
But it’s Geneva’s proximity to many ski resorts in Switzerland and France that makes it so popular with tourists. St Cergue is close by, and the resorts of Samoëns, La Clusaz and Chamonix are just an hour’s drive away (so you can easily do a day trip, and don’t need to necessarily devote your whole holiday to winter sports). In the city, wander the picturesque Old Town, set on a hill that surrounds the magnificent Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, rummage in the famous flea market of Plaine de Plainpalais, stroll through the luscious green Bastions Park, and don’t forget to take a selfie at the Jet d’Eau, an enormous fountain that fires jets of water 140m into the air.
