Devon’s county town is a small city with a rich history. The Roman’s started building the Fosse Way here in the first and second centuries, a road which leads 293 miles all the way to Lincoln. A quietly prosperous place, it’s home to a thriving music scene and even has its own Symphony Orchestra.

The heart of Exeter is fairly compact, with most of the city’s key shops and services located within walking distance of each other. The two main shopping centres are Guildhall and Princesshay, both of which are where you’ll find a range of big-name brands. For more independent shops and boutiques, visit the West Quarter or the cobbled Gandy Street where you can also find a great mix of cafes and bars. Exeter Quayside is easy to reach on foot and is home to lots of lovely restaurants overlooking the waterfront.

The South West of England has a good reputation for food and drink and Exeter has plenty of delis, breweries, and markets to explore. Devon also boasts a strong reputation for brewing excellent real ales and ciders, easily available in Exeter’s many traditional pubs and bars. Top things to do here include a visit to the award-winning Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter Catherdral, and even a tour round Exeter's Underground Passages which is packed with fascinating interactive exhibits. There’s also a lively programme of annual events here from food shows to music festivals.

Exeter is also a gateway to the south-west including the picturesque counties of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset with its quaint towns, coastal villages, and stunning countryside.
