Visitors to Bulgaria have started to explore the country more and more in recent years. As well as the capital of Sofia, they’re keen to explore some of the lesser-known towns and cities including the gorgeous port of Burgas. Known as ‘the gateway to the Black Sea’, you’ll find many of Bulgaria's lovely beaches on this peaceful and picturesque coastline.

The well-maintained Northern Beach runs alongside the city’s 5km Sea Garden, which stretches from a luscious park area all the way down to the pier. Here you’ll find restaurants and beach bars overlooking the water as well as sports fields for ball games if you’re feeling active. Sunny Beach and Obzor Beach are great for jet-skiing and surfing, and it’s easy to hire loungers and umbrellas if you just want to relax. Irakli Beach is a great choice if you want a more serene spot to enjoy the sun, sea and sand – wild and undeveloped, it rarely gets crowded here.

The Old Town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, bursting with historic charm thanks to its old Byzantine churches, charming fountains, historic forts, and well-preserved Roman ruins. You’ll also find a lively pedestrianised centre, where cafés, bars, boutiques, and restaurants decorate the charming cobbled streets.

While not traditionally a holiday destination, the city has plenty to offer would-be holidaymakers, including a waterpark, several large shopping malls, botanical gardens, an opera house, and plenty of nature walks into the surrounding countryside. Burgas also has particularly good weather in the summer months, often competing with the balmy heats of nearby Turkey. And, thanks to its location in the centre of the Black Sea Coastline, Burgas also makes for a fantastic base to explore the eastern areas of Bulgaria.
