Sometimes known as ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromsø, lies around 350 km above the Arctic Circle and is the largest city in northern Norway. Surprisingly, although it's still chilly, the weather is milder than that of mainland Norway thanks to the warm Gulf Stream coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Tromsø is one of the best places in the world to see the incredible northern lights. You can also enjoy dog or reindeer sledding, go whale watching, have a snowmobile adventure, and kayak in crystal clear waters surrounded by craggy snow-capped peaks. Make the most of the ‘midnight sun’ between May and July when it never gets dark, while at the other end of the scale, ‘polar night’ lasts from November 27th to Jan 27th.

Tromsø is ideal for more adventurous travellers looking for a getaway off the beaten track. Spend the night in a cosy lavvue, or book a stay in the world famous Tromsø Ice Domes. And you won’t want to miss out on a genuine Norwegian sauna experience. Tromsø is small enough to be able to reach most places on foot. A trip up the Fjellheisen cable car will help you access the best view of Tromsø city, whose highlights include the ‘Arctic Cathedral’, and the arched bridge which links to the mainland. During your visit, remember to visit Tromsø’s oldest pub Ølhallen to sample some local beers from the most northern brewery in the world.
