Travelling into Manchester Airport for Christmas

Tips to help you make the most of your experience when you arrive

Seasons Greetings from Manchester Airport

Flying into Manchester over the Christmas period? Whether you’re planning to spend time with friends, and family, or are just enjoying a winter break, you’re sure to have lots of festive fun while you’re here. Manchester Airport is the perfect place to land for exploring what the vibrant north west has to offer. And there's so much to do while you’re here. From bustling markets, to cosy pubs, exciting football matches, wonderfully wintery walks and more!

But it’s a busy time of year, so our travel experts have put together this handy guide to everything you need to know for an easy onward journey from Manchester Airport over the festive period.

What to expect after landing

Before you leave Manchester Airport, you'll pass through Customs and Immigration and Passport Control. Just follow the relevant signs for the EU or non-EU lanes when you get off your plane. You won’t need to queue if your passport has the biometric symbol on the front cover because you can use the eGates instead.

Our UK Border Force officers are there to keep everyone safe all year round. So if you’re carrying gifts in your hand luggage, it’s better to leave them unwrapped, just in case they need to be checked. Once you’re through Passport Control, information screens will let you know which carousel you’ll need at the Baggage Reclaim hall to collect your checked-in luggage.

Hassle free car rentals

Want the freedom of having your own wheels? It’s easy to rent a car from Manchester Airport and you can manage your booking online. You’ll always get the best available prices when hiring a car with us and there are no hidden booking or credit card fees.

All our partner operators offer a wide range of services at great prices and there’s a large range of vehicles to choose from. We can help you find a car for every budget, from small and zippy hatchbacks, to spacious family cars, or even something more luxurious. A free bus drives passengers from the terminals to our Car Rental Village every ten minutes so it won’t take long for you to pick up your car and start exploring.

Christmas shopping at World Duty Free

Christmas is a time for giving and receiving presents - and you can find some wonderful and unique gifts at World Duty Free. With our handy Reserve and Collect service, you can shop online up to 30 days before your flight. Once you’ve chosen your items, they’ll be waiting for you at the World Duty Free collection point when you land. All you need to do is pay for your items and pick up your shopping before going through customs.

Save money on travel exclusives from big name brands and scoop up products you won’t find anywhere else. How’s that for easy Christmas shopping?

Unwind at the aether lounge

If you feel the need for a little pampering after your flight, why not book a spot at Manchester Airport’s new private terminal? You can expect a premium hospitality experience wherever you’re flying from, and regardless of your ticket class. When you land, a chauffeur-driven car will be waiting to drive you to aether. Once through the private terminal’s passport control area, you can relax with some refreshments while your bags are returned to you. This is ideal if your plane arrives early in the morning and you need somewhere to relax before you can check into your hotel.

When you're ready to leave aether, you can arrange to be picked up or your aether Host can book a taxi for you. Find out more and book here.

Getting picked up

If your friends and family are planning to meet you at Manchester Airport, there are Pick Up areas close to every terminal. The wait time of 30 minutes is ideal if you’ve managed to clear passport control quickly and don’t need to wait for any hold baggage. But to avoid any need for clock watching, our Short Stay car park is definitely the best place to park for those planning to pick up passengers. It’s easy to keep an eye on arrival times with our live flight information and they can even grab a quick coffee and a snack at the terminal while they wait.

Onward travel

You won’t need to worry about getting around because Manchester Airport has its own convenient transport hub, including a train station, tram station and bus / coach station.

Direct train services to Manchester city centre and other areas run throughout the day. A network of local bus and tram services also link across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and west Derbyshire, while coach services offer longer-distance connections to other major UK cities. Just remember to plan around reduced services on public transport over key dates during the holiday period.

Festive airport hotel options

If you’re visiting friends and family but prefer the flexibility of having your own space, then book a stay at one of our excellent airport hotels. Our nearby transport hub makes it easy to get around, and many hotels even offer park and stay deals which are handy if you’ve decided to hire a car. Relax in your comfortable and stylish room, watch a Christmas movie, wander down to the restaurant for dinner, and enjoy a great night’s sleep.

Stay connected over the holidays

You’ll need to stay connected so you can make plans while you’re here. An eSIM, or digital SIM card, lets you access multiple networks from one device. Switching between networks and countries is straightforward as your device will automatically connect you wherever you are. eSIMs are digitally activated by scanning a QR code or entering an activation code, and you can switch between networks easily without having to commit to a contract. Click here for more information and to order an eSIM.

Spending money

There’s no need to worry about having the right currency. It’s easy to pay for a wide range of goods and services all over the world using your phone or a card. Travelex offers a multi-currency prepaid money card. You can lock in your exchange rates, so fluctuating exchange rates won’t be a problem during your travels. There are no overseas ATM charges with the Travelex card so you can access free cash without the worry of fees eating into your travel budget. If you would like to have some ready cash, you can pre-order your currency with Travelex and pick it up at Manchester Airport.

Manchester and its surrounding areas can be a magical place in the winter with buzzing Christmas markets, festive days out and stunning seasonal landscapes. Just be prepared for shorter days as it gets darker earlier and remember to dress for the colder weather!
