Each year maintenance works are required to maintain Runway 1 Runway 23R/05L (the most used runway) and its adjoining taxiways. We publish dates of the nights when Runway 1 Runway 23R/05L will be closed. At the bottom of this page are videos that show nights of runway maintenance and give you an idea of all that is accomplished in just one night. Runway 2 Runway 23L/05R will be used as the sole runway between 22:30 and 06:00 hours on the following dates:
2024:

December | 1st – 5th | 22:30 – 06:00 |
The dates above include ‘weather contingency’ and some redundancy; it is unlikely that all of the nights will be required. In the event of bad weather/low visibility or that no works are required; the works may be deferred or cancelled and Runway 1 Runway 23R/05L reinstated. Normal operations will resume at all other times. These changes are permitted within the terms of the Planning Permission Runway 2Runway 23L/05R.
We publish details on the hours of using for Runway 1 and Runway 2 together on our dual runway use page.
The multi-million-pound refurbishment of Runway 1Runway 23R/05L in 2010-2011 incorporated works that have reduced maintenance requirements; but it is our prime runway and is in use 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. The Runway and its adjoining taxiways experience heavy usage and naturally require maintenance; line painting, drain clearing, surface inspection (on foot by a team of operations colleagues) and other unglamorous housekeeping duties are all required to keep the Runway in a good condition. These tasks naturally require the runway to be closed to traffic. Below left is a video clip showing some regular maintenance runway work.
Over 2010-2011 we carried out a £20 million refurbishment programme on Runway 1. As a part of this project, we compiled video clips to explain what work needed to be done and an actual film of various stages of the work being carried out. We created two video clips that reviewed the project and our communication strategy for the works.
